The couplet reading “A Family of Culture and Education; A Great Library of  Ethics and Etiquette”

The couplet is hung on the front gate of Yuyan Academy, with an inscription on the top reading “Autumn of Ji-Hai Year of Guangxu Period” and another on the bottom reading “Written by Lao Zhaoguang” and a seal. With golden clerical scripts in a red background, the main body “A Family of Culture and Education; A Great Library of Ethics and Etiquette” is simple but vigorous, with certain stroke features coming from steles of Yiying and Xiacheng in the Eastern Han Dynasty. The inscriptions are regular scripts. The couplet means that a family of scholars is expected to write books and found schools.
